Are You Eligible for
Prizes?
Q. Are you
a member of Mecklenburg Electric Cooperative?
A. Couples sometimes assume that when they are
married and one is a member of Mecklenburg
Electric Cooperative, that they both are automatically
members. But membership with the
Cooperative is listed in only one person’s name unless
otherwise requested. To see how your
membership is listed, look at the top line of the
address on your electric bill. If your name is not
on that first line, you cannot register for prizes at
our annual meeting or cast a vote during
elections.
Q. Who can register for prizes?
A. If you and your spouse have joint
membership, either person can register for prizes at
our
annual meetings. Each MEC membership has one vote in
elections, so in the case of joint
membership, either one of the members could register
and cast a vote (but not both).
The same principle is true when an account remains in
the name of a deceased individual. The
surviving spouse or family member cannot register at
meetings or vote. A request to change the
membership to that of the surviving spouse or family
member should be made.
Q. How do
I make a change in membership?
A. In either case, requesting a change in
membership should be done
prior to our annual meeting in
June to be eligible for prizes
and voting. To switch to joint
membership or remove the name of
a deceased family member, contact your local
district office.
