Mecklenburg Electric Cooperative (MEC) sponsored three young
people at the 2007 Rural Electric Youth Tour in Washington, DC, the
week of June 10th. Those participating were Kaitlin Layne, the
daughter
of Mark and Leslie Layne of Clarksville; Hilary Layne, the
daughter of
Ronald and Ellen Layne of Hurt; and Najah Travis, the
son of Sandra Travis of Emporia. Brian Morris,
member services and public relations representative in Chase
City,
was the chaperone for the trip.

The week’s activities included meeting with Congressman
Virgil Goode
and
touring both houses of Congress and various other government
agencies.
A highlight of the tour was Youth Day during which the
students joined over 1,400 other teenagers representing states
from across the country. Speakers emphasized the difference
young people can make in their communities by volunteering
for community projects. One of the speakers was Mike
Schlappi, four-time Paralympic gold medalist who has been
confined to a wheelchair from an accident that left him
paralyzed, gave his presentation, "If You Can't Stand Up,
Stand Out." Schlappi told the students that the best
way to predict the future is to create it. |
