It has been a long-standing tradition of Mecklenburg Electric Cooperative to celebrate Arbor Day by planting dogwood trees at elementary schools located in its service territory. This year, South Boston Elementary School was chosen to be the recipient of the tree.
Before planting the dogwood, MEC Vice President of Member and Energy Services David Lipscomb presented an informational program to third graders about the importance of trees to the environment.
“We always enjoy teaching students the importance and benefits of trees to our environment,” said Lipscomb. “We also appreciate the opportunity to share MEC’s commitment to utilizing tree-friendly construction practices and be a part of the education of these third-graders.”
The program was assisted by Seth Bowen of Green Acres Lawn and Landscaping Service.
Mecklenburg Electric is recognized as a Tree Line USA Utility by the Arbor Day Foundation. In fact, it has held that recognition for 11 consecutive years. The Tree Line USA program exists to recognize best practices in public and private utility arboriculture, demonstrating how trees and utilities can coexist for the benefit of communities and citizens. The Arbor Day foundation collaborates with the National Association of State Foresters on this initiative.
