James P. Guy II, general counsel to Mecklenburg Electric Cooperative and its affiliates, EMPOWER Broadband and EMPOWER Telecom, was recently named president of the Energy Bar Association’s Southern Chapter for the 2024-25 bar year. Guy previously served as EBA Southern Chapter President in 2010-11 and vice-president in 2023-24.
The Energy Bar Association is an international, non-profit association of attorneys, energy professionals and students active in all areas of energy law. EBA has seven regional chapters across the U.S. and one in Canada. The Southern Chapter covers 11 states - Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia and West Virginia - and focuses on issues in energy regulation specific to the southeastern United States.
“There are many significant concerns which have long-lasting effects on the energy industry, and most importantly, its impact on our membership,” said MEC President and CEO Casey Logan. “With Jim’s legal expertise and his experience in the electric cooperative industry, he will no doubt remain a distinguished leader, collaborator and mentor among the energy lawyers representing the southern United States. We are proud of his stepping up and taking on this important role.”
Guy currently serves as board chairman for the Virginia State Air Pollution Control Board, he served as the 128th President of the Virginia Bar Association, and was a partner at Williams Mullen Law in Richmond prior to joining Mecklenburg Electric Cooperative. Additionally, he has been active in the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation for many years, serving as board chair of the Virginia Chapter for two.
