It has been a long-standing tradition of Mecklenburg Electric Cooperative to celebrate Arbor Day by planting a dogwood tree at two elementary schools located in its service territory. This year, Brunswick Academy and Meherrin-Powellton Elementary School were chosen to be the recipients of the dogwoods.
Before planting the trees, MEC Arborist and Vegetation Manager Ray DeJarnette presented an informational program to third graders about the importance of trees to the environment.
“This is always one of our favorite programs. We enjoy teaching the students the benefits of trees and sharing with them MEC’s commitment to utilizing tree-friendly construction practices. We’re pleased to have an opportunity to be a part of the education of these young people,” he said.
The program was assisted by Seth Bowen of Green Acres Lawn and Landscaping Service.
Mecklenburg Electric is recognized as a Tree Line USA Utility by the Arbor Day Foundation. In fact, it has held that recognition for eight consecutive years. The Tree Line USA program exists to recognize best practices in public and private utility arboriculture, demonstrating how trees and utilities can coexist for the benefit of communities and citizens. The Arbor Day foundation collaborates with the National Association of State Foresters on this initiative.
