Please Heed Safety Warnings!
MEC’s system is powered by 32 substations, which consist of power lines, transformers, circuit breakers and other equipment that carry extremely high voltages of electricity. Because high-voltage power runs through substation equipment, substations can pose a real danger to those who are not trained or authorized to enter them.
MEC’s No. 1 priority is to keep our employees, contractors and the public safe. To prevent unauthorized entry, MEC substations are surrounded by chain-link fencing with barbed wire, locks and signs that clearly warn of danger. In fact, it is illegal to enter substations without prior authorization.
It is important to teach children the dangers of substations. Children should be warned never to enter an electric substation for any reason — even on a dare or to attempt to retrieve a pet, ball or any toy from these areas. If such an incident should occur, please call MEC for assistance.
Finally, MEC asks for your help to keep our members and substations safe. If you notice anything unusual with electric facilities, such as an open substation gate, open equipment, hanging wire, etc., contact 911 or your local MEC office immediately at 800-989-4161.
SUBSTATION SAFETY TIPS
• Never release metallic balloons near substations. If they get caught in the equipment or lines, they can cause power outages.
• Never fly kites or drones near electrical substations. If you do and the kite or drone gets caught inside the fence, let us retrieve it for you. Substations should only be entered by trained professionals with the proper safety equipment.
• Teach youngsters to stay away from electrical substation fences. The area is dangerous, and these fences are NOT for climbing.
• If you see a substation fence or transformer cabinet that is open or looks to be vandalized, please contact us immediately.
