MEC Named Top Virginia Employer…Climbs from #18 to #15

By Best Companies Group and Virginia Business Magazine

Mecklenburg Electric Cooperative (MEC) has been named one of the 2019 Best Places to Work in Virginia for the second consecutive year. The list comprises 100 companies, and MEC ranked #15 in the “Midsize Employer” category.

The annual Best Places to Work in Virginia list was created by Virginia Business magazine and Best Companies Group; this statewide survey and awards program identifies, recognizes, and honors the best places of employment in Virginia that benefit the state’s economy, workforce, and businesses.

To be considered for participation, companies must fulfill the following eligibility requirements:

  • Be a for-profit, not-for-profit business or government entity;
  • Be a publicly or privately held business;
  • Have a facility in the state of Virginia;
  • Have at least 15 employees working in the state of Virginia; and
  • Be in business for a minimum of one year.

Companies from across the state entered the two-part survey process to determine the Best Places to Work in Virginia. The first phase of the survey consisted of evaluating each nominated company’s workplace policies, practices, philosophy, systems, and demographics. That initial survey section of the process was worth 25 percent of the total evaluation. The second part consisted of an employee survey to measure the employee experience. This part of the process was worth 75 percent of the total evaluation. The combined scores determined the top companies and the final rankings. Best Companies Group managed the overall registration and survey process in Virginia and analyzed the data to determine the final rankings.

MEC President & CEO John C. Lee, Jr., comments, “I am very proud of Mecklenburg Electric Cooperative and its employees, and I’m pleased that our organization has been recognized for the second consecutive year by Virginia Business magazine as one of the best places to work in Virginia.” The “Midsize Employer” category in which MEC competed, consists of businesses with 100 - 249 U.S. employees and, at 104 employees, MEC is very close to the small employer category. MEC climbed to #15 on the list after finishing last year’s survey ranked at #18.

“We are fully aware that maintaining a positive work environment results in a fully invested workforce that is focused intently on caring for our members. This recognition is based on workplace policies and practices as well as how our employees view their employer, and this honor is a testament that MEC employees hold their employer in high regard. Our cooperative strives to create an atmosphere where employees can thrive and come to work every day at an organization that is recognized for its commitment to teamwork, transparency, and excellence.”

Lee continues, “It should go without saying that the dedication of our employees to MEC’s members hinges on so much more than a paycheck…working 24/7 through ice storms, tornados, or hurricanes and giving a hard day’s work for a day’s pay every day comes from a devotion to service and commitment to those we serve…it’s a dedication that’s impossible to build on compensation alone. This award is a testament to our board of directors, our management team, and our employees all having ownership of our mission and working closely together to meet the needs of our membership.

Teamwork is far more than a trendy phrase at MEC; in fact, we are a working family that diligently holds itself responsible for meeting the tremendous responsibility we have to our members with the best of service. We are committed, to a person, to bringing value to those we serve, and to being a valuable corporate citizen to the communities in our service territory. When all that comes together, as it does at MEC, going the extra mile comes naturally and creates unique workplace rewards that benefit employees and members alike.”
